Gardanne: the old mining town between Aix and Marseille
Gardanne still shows its mining past: the Morandat shaft, now an activity hub, and the power station visible from afar. Cézanne painted the hilltop village around its bell tower. Today people come for the Georges-Charpak campus of the École des Mines, the Avon business park or to go home.
From Saint-Charles the route joins the A7 and the A51 to the Gardanne exit, or goes through Simiane when evening traffic is heavy. There is no toll on this stretch.
Do you serve the École des Mines campus?
Yes. Give the building or laboratory and the driver will stop at the campus entrance on the Route de Mimet.
Gardanne, a mining town
For more than a century Gardanne was the heart of the Provence coal basin, where lignite was mined. The Morandat shaft, the last extraction site, closed in 2003 and has become a venue for business and culture. The alumina plant, the oldest in the world still operating, recalls the town’s industrial past.
The old centre, around the plane-shaded Cours de la République, keeps a lively market. Cézanne stayed in Gardanne in 1885–1886 and painted the village from the hills.
Gardanne by TER or by car
Gardanne station is on the Marseille–Aix line, with frequent trains during the day. In the evening services thin out, and the station is far from some districts such as Biver. For a late return or with luggage, a private driver from Saint-Charles takes you to your door in about 25 minutes.
