Daudet’s windmill and the Barbegal aqueduct

The windmill is at the edge of the village and the Roman Barbegal aqueduct a few kilometres away: the driver can stop there.

Fontvieille, Daudet’s village

Fontvieille is a good base for visiting Arles and Les Baux. From the airport, a private driver saves you the train to Arles followed by a taxi.

For a group, the 8-seat Van costs about €23 per person.

Letters from My Windmill

Alphonse Daudet stayed in Fontvieille at the château de Montauban, and the Saint-Pierre windmill on the hill became the symbol of his “Letters from My Windmill”; a small museum is housed inside. A few kilometres away, the remains of the Roman aqueduct and mill of Barbegal, one of the oldest industrial sites known, can be visited freely.

The village also lives from stone: its quarries supplied part of Arles’ monuments. Today Fontvieille offers boutique hotels and guest houses halfway between the Camargue and the Alpilles.

A base for the Alpilles

From Fontvieille, Les Baux-de-Provence is ten minutes away, Arles a quarter of an hour and Saint-Rémy twenty minutes. On Sunday mornings many cyclists ride the road to Maussane, and the driver picks a route that avoids the bunches.
