Apt: capital of the Luberon and its ochres

Apt is the main town of the Luberon, in the Calavon valley. Its Saturday morning market, one of the largest in Provence, takes over the whole centre. It is a base for the ochre sites of Roussillon and Rustrel and for the villages of the Monts de Vaucluse.

The driver follows the A51 to Pertuis, then crosses the Luberon via Cadenet and Lourmarin, or goes round via Cavaillon depending on roadworks. Allow about an hour and a quarter, tolls included.

Can we go on to the Colorado Provençal at Rustrel?

Yes, it is about fifteen minutes from Apt. Name the arrival car park when booking.

Capital of the Luberon

Apt is the largest town in the Luberon, known for its candied fruit and its big Saturday morning market, one of the liveliest in Provence. Sainte-Anne cathedral and its crypts stand in the centre, a few steps from the café terraces of Place de la Bouquerie. Roussillon, Saignon, Buoux and the Colorado provençal at Rustrel are all within half an hour.

On Saturdays the centre is closed for the market: you are dropped at the edge of the old town, or at your hotel when access allows. Cyclists know Apt well: the Calavon cycle route follows a former railway from the town, and dismantled bikes travel in the Van on request.
