The route

The driver takes the A7 to Cavaillon, then the L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue road and follows the river up to the village.

Arriving in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

The village and the spring

The centre is pedestrian: the driver drops you at the car parks, from where a path follows the Sorgue to the spring.

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue nearby

The antiques town is ten minutes away: a stop is possible on the way.

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, source of the Sorgue

The site draws many visitors in summer and the car parks fill up fast. By private driver you are dropped as close as possible and the driver comes back at the agreed time.

It is also the route to the riverside guest houses between Fontaine and L’Isle.

Petrarch and the paper mill

The poet Petrarch lived here in the 14th century; a museum by the Sorgue is dedicated to him. Further down, the Vallis Clausa paper mill still makes paper the old way, in front of visitors. The ruined castle of the bishops of Cavaillon watches over the village from its rock.

The spring itself is one of the largest in Europe: the water wells up from a chasm whose bottom divers have never reached. After heavy rain the pool overflows and the Sorgue foams; in summer the water stays deep in the chasm and the river begins lower down, among the rocks.

Canoeing on the Sorgue

In season, rental companies offer canoe trips down the Sorgue to Partage-des-Eaux, near L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The driver can drop you at the start and collect you at the finish. On a rainy day, the Jean-Garcin history museum, devoted to the Resistance, completes the visit.
