Roussillon is perched on red ochre cliffs north of the Luberon, and the Sentier des Ocres trail winds through the old quarries. The village is small and its paid car parks fill quickly in summer, so a drop-off close by saves you the search.
The driver takes the A7 to Cavaillon, then reaches Roussillon via Les Imberts and Goult across the plain, toll included. Allow about an hour and a quarter.

The ochre trail and the Mathieu works
Roussillon’s ochre trail crosses old quarries in half an hour to an hour, in colours ranging from yellow to blood red. Ochre was once exported worldwide; the former Mathieu works, at the edge of the village, explain how it was made and run pigment workshops. The hilltop village, its façades in every shade of ochre, is listed among the most beautiful in France.
In season, the village car park is full before noon. By private driver you are dropped at the trail entrance with no parking to find, and the driver returns at the agreed time for Gordes, Bonnieux or the airport. A few hotels and guest houses are in the village; others lie in the countryside towards Goult and Gargas.
